Why In The World Do People Play Golf?

The game of golf actually seems quite senseless.

In fact, the absurdity of driving a little ball around a course in order to eventually tap that ball into a tiny hole just seems like a huge waste of time.

Or does it? Surely there must be more to the game than meets the eye or why would so many individuals flock to the golf course every season?

In all honesty, I have been fascinated by the game almost all my life. As a young adolescent, I would sneak onto the golf course to scour the woods and water traps for lost balls. I would then use those balls to resell for the purpose of eventually buying my own set of clubs. Later, those reclaimed balls would be used to play a round during the off hours when all others had long since gone home. As you might expect, a round of golf in the evening is not an easy achievement since glow in the dark golf balls were not available until as of late. It was easy to lose a ball right in the middle of the fairway!

Anyway, as you might imagine, passion for the game of golf is a personal thing. Every individual golfer could probably list a myriad of reasons why they are attracted to this magnificent sport.

What follows are a few of my own...

Golf is a personal sport.

Grab your clubs and head out to the course! You don't need to bring a whole team along to play a round of golf. As each shot is played, the mental conversation that plays in your head to strategize your next shot will more than keep you company. But if you prefer to bring your buddies along then all the better! Not only will you be playing against yourself, you can play against them as well!

Golf provides countless moments of ecstacy and agony. (The pendulum swings both ways!)

One minute you're on top of the world! You've made a shot that could rank with all the top pro's of the sport. The next minute you could momentarily lose your concentration and totally botch a shot that could cost you several strokes on the final tally. But the game is also somewhat forgiving. You can hit a drive that lands far short of its intended distance. Then, a long iron shot will put you back in the game. Couple that iron shot with a picture perfect chip and a short putt to the hole and you're on top of the world with a sweet par! Does it get any better than this?

The golf course is your biggest opponent.

Forget your friends and associates because they aren't your hardest opponents. The course itself is your greatest foe! If you can't read the course, then the course itself will beat you. Will the ball break left or right? Is the course slow today because the surface is damp or is it like grease lightning because it's dry as a bone? How hard do I need to tap the ball? There are an infinite number of variables that need to be beat in order to perfect your game that the challenge itself may be virtually insurmountable. But isn't it really the challenge that draws you back time and time again!

Golf requires perfect planning.

Every single shot is different than the shot before. And every single shot needs to be properly evaluated and then executed. If you alter your swing, you change the outcome. However, the way in which you play the game is entirely up to you. Having played the course before, you may draw upon your knowledge to give you a little boost. But you may also realize that a particular shot can be played multiple ways and that maybe this time you need to play this shot differently. Maybe you need to alter your swing or perhaps choose a different iron. Again, the choice is entirely up to you.

Other aspects of the game of golf.

The game of golf is different at every outing. It challenges you each and every time. The reward is in the enjoyment we get from each challenge. Golf provides excellent social opportunities with people of like interests. Golf is also a fantastic family sport since young and old, female and male, can all partake and enjoy the game.

The list of what attracts people to the game of golf goes on and on. The reasons are numerous and are as individual as people themselves.
